The S language, developed at Bell Labs, is widely used in the
statistical community. This version of S is marketed by Insightful and
it offers all the usual statistical functions (and then some with 4,200
functions). One can import data from many different sources,
including SAS and Excel. Among its rather unique features are its
object-oriented language (so data and procedures are more closely tied
together, which can speed analysis) and "data visualization and
exploration" which offers "exceptional graphing capabilities."
Insightful is the sole licensee of S.
A derivative of S, called R
, is now being developed. That
software is freely available.
