CESifo Venice Summer Institute 2015: International Currency Exposure
Venice, Island of San Servolo, Italy
The recent crises at the global and regional levels have brought this issue to the forefront of policy debate in many parts of the world. China, for instance, has recently increased its efforts to promote the use of the renmimbi in international transactions. Eurozone countries have been concerned about break-up risk, while Eastern European countries have been introducing the euro as their official currency. Furthermore, currency mismatch between assets and liabilities has contributed to financial turmoil in several emerging market economies. What are the prospects for policy-driven approaches to alter the international landscape of currency denomination? How do policymakers respond to unintended shifts in the currency composition caused by financial liberalization, carry trades or capital flight? What are the factors that contribute to the choice of a currency in the pricing of international debts and global commodities? What are the implications for welfare and aggregate as well as sectoral output growth? The conference offers an excellent opportunity for academics and policy researchers to address these questions and to present their original works on a wide range of issues related to currency denomination and the global economy.
