|Location:||Hamburg, GIGA, Germany|
|Subject:||Presenter: Professor Ilan Alon (Director of the China Center of Rollins College, Visiting Scholar and Asia fellow at Harvard) Discussant: Professor Christoph Lattemann (Professor for Information Management and Corporate Governance Educatis University, Switzerland, and Harvard Kennedy School Visiting Scholar) In his presentation, Professor Ilan Alon examines how country-level, industry-level, and firm-level fac-tors affect the extent of corporate communications about CSR in Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC). Using data from the 105 largest MNCs in BRIC, Ilan Alon gives insights on how CSR motives, processes, and stakeholder issues are discussed in corporate communications. He shows that the countrys governance environment is the most important driving force behinds CSR communications intensity. Generally speaking, firms communicating more CSR tend to be larger firms in the manufac-turing industry in more rule-based societies. These firms also tend to have stronger corporate govern-ance as measured by a high proportion of outside board directors and a separation of the roles of the chairman and the CEO.
